October is the month we bid adieu to summer and embrace all things PUMPKIN. Stores devote entire displays to the latest pumpkin flavored culinary creations (seriously folks, you can buy pretty much anything nowadays with a little added pumpkin magic.) Your favorite barista is whipping up pumpkin spiced heaven for a limited time (until it is inevitably replaced by all things peppermint,) and that vacant lot in town is transformed overnight into a pumpkin play land that would make Charlie Brown and his friends park it there until The Great Pumpkin arrived. Here at Holster Brands we too celebrate the pumpkin in all of it’s carnations, especially its decorative qualities. In honor of pumpkinpalooza, here are some fun facts about our funky fruit friend the pumpkin!

  • Fact: That’s right, your eyes aren’t deceiving you…the pumpkin is actually a fruit in the gourd family. You may know it’s cousins honeydew melons, watermelons, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and zucchini.
  • Fact: Pumpkins are native to the western hemisphere, and have been grown in North America for over 4 thousand years.
  • Fact: Pumpkins are low in calories, fat, and sodium, AND they’re gluten free…so serve some up at your next party instead of bread :).
  • Fact: Over 1.5 BILLION pounds of pumpkin are grown each year…most of which are used for Halloween.
  • Fact: Once carved into a Jack-O-Lantern, pumpkins only last between 5-10 days, less than that in warmer climates (sorry California and Arizona.)
Now what if we told you that you could have your pumpkin AND Jack-O-Lantern too? Not only do we make Jack-O-Lanterns every year, but they last for years and years without ever going bad. That’s right, with just a few items you can create as many decorative pumpkins in the beginning of October as your heart desires, and you don’t have to worry about them rotting on your front porch and scaring the trick or treaters away. Save the carving for closer to Halloween…your neighbors will thank you for it!
Here’s what you need:
  • Foam pumpkins
  • A pencil
  • A pair of scissors
  • A glue gun
  • Colored glue sticks
  • A Hobby Holster

To make these decorative Jack-O-Lanterns you have two options…they’re both great, so just pick whichever works best for you.
Option 1:
Draw or trace your pattern onto the pumpkin. Select your glue stick color and follow the design you just drew directly on the pumpkin. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then display it proudly.
Option 2:
Select your glue stick colors. Draw your design onto a heat resistant work surface (you know we’re talking about your Hobby Holster right?) When cooled, trim your design if needed, peel off of the work surface, and attach it to your pumpkin with a dab of hot glue.
Not only do these crafty little Jack-O-Lanterns withstand the test of time, they are quick and easy to make. You can use any size pumpkin you’d like, display them indoors or out, and you’re only limited by your imagination and the length of your glue gun cord.
Happy Pumpkin Crafting!
